This scene is important because if Zero didn't throw the shoe down the bridge and hit Stanley he would never have gone to a camp for bad kids. The story could never even exist. Going to camp was a new experience for Stanley because he has to deal with things that make him mentally and physically stronger, like he has to dig a 5 feet deep and wide hole and he parent weren't there to support him.
